Tiki Lights: Just Right

Tiki lights are a wonderful decorative choice if you are wanting something a little less common for your party or outdoor event. They instantly give an exotic and ambient feel that can be very exciting for all kinds of guests.

Tiki lights can make your outdoor meals or other outside bonding activities with friends or family a lot different than that usual or what you’re used to. With the right kind of tiki patio lights, or tiki light strings, you can change the look and feel of your backyard, garden, patio or deck. It can feel festive and fun just by a simple addition.

Typically when you buy tiki lights and tiki torches you will get bamboo or jungle type decor with them, which just goes with the territory. They are also available in steel or various metals, if that better suits your needs. Typically these metal tiki lights will be more expensive, and of course heavier to move around and harder to install because of this. The metal tiki lights will last longer than the natural material such as wood or bamboo, so that is also something you should consider.

Tiki lights and tiki torches are also great for lighting up a backyard and adding the silhouettes and shadows that make it come to life. They can reflect on or off of other garden objects such as plants, walls, decorations or pots. By doing this, it almost gives you a different dimension and a different look and feel that you might be used to.

There are many kinds of tiki lights, and sometimes people call tiki torches the same thing, but those are different. Tiki lights do not require fuel, and do not contain an open flame. They are eithery battery, solar or electrically powered, or a combination of the two. Tiki torches are powered by fuels or gases and require a lot more safety precautions as you would imagine.

You can get tiki lights that hang as strings, which is another type and really add their own variance to any atmosphere. You can combine the two for a very lively and unique outdoor event for the look and feel of your very own Luau.

You can find tiki lights and tiki torches of these kinds from different online sites like Amazon, eBay or other manufacturers. Because tiki lights are not the most common right now, it might be kind of hard to find them locally so if you need them for an upcoming event, get on to finding them now.

For whatever event you want to brighten up, tiki lights, and tiki torches can really do wonders. The good news is that they’ve been around for a long time, so you should be able to find them locally, or online, and in the exact style you want.

Solar Tiki Lights

Solar tiki lights are great because they give you the look of a regular tiki torch, but without worrying about open flames or electrical wiring. They really do a lot to add variety and spice to any settings. They can be romantic if used correctly, or just to liven up a party and give it that extra special touch to the theme you are trying to portray. The gentle flickering lights of the tiki light can really do a lot.

Solar tiki lights are also good for adding ambiance to hot tubs, saunas or decks. They can make a great addition to landscaping or around water decorations. The tropical look of the tiki light is definitely unique.

Tiki lights that are powered by solar are usually easy to assemble and can be moved from one location to the other very easily. They are sturdy and if you are looking for the top of the line tiki lights then go with steel or copper. You can usually get them in a variety of different finishes so just figure out which one would go better with your layout and decide.

Typically there will be glass or hard plastic around the LED light, so you don’t have to worry about fire or fuel. When the solar tiki light battery dies, or stops recharging they are easy enough to replace.

You can usually adjust the height by either the adjustments on the solar tiki light pole, or by placing them further in the ground. If you have a hard area, look for tiki lights that have a base, and don’t need to be inserted into your actual ground. This is ideal for hardwood or concrete areas where there is no grass or soil.

You can find solar tiki lights for a fairly good price, but they don’t last forever. Since they will be outside, you might run into the problem of theme rusting, but fortunately they are inexpensive enough to replace fairly often. If you’d rather, you can always place them out only during your occasions and take them out when not in use. This definitely gives you a lot more use out of the solar tiki lights, with just a little extra added effort.

Make Your Own Tiki Light

Tiki Lights are not as common as Tiki Torches, but are sometimes confused with them. There are many different kinds of lights that might be referred to Tiki Lights, so it can get a little confusing. Here we go over how to make some basic Tiki Lights, for a very low cost.

The things you will need are about 6 feet of PVC pipe, some very strong glue, some tan colored spray paint, small, or tea light candles, some soil, a coffee can, your choice of design, a planter and some straw.

The first thing you’ll need to do is paint the PVC pipe and the coffee can thoroughly with the tan colored spray paint. Make sure you let it dry completely before moving on to the next step. It usually takes about 15-30 minutes, then you should be good to go. When you are spray painting your PVC pipe, it’s good to use a textured spray paint to add some additional depth.

Once the PVC pipe and the coffee can have dried completely, have someone else put the pipe into the planter, and fill it with soil to hold it in place. You can fill it with whatever type of soil you want, dirt, soil, sand, etc. Make sure you use enough to hold your future tiki light firmly in place.

Then, take the glue and attach the coffee can to the very top of the PVC pipe. Make sure it’s stable and dried before continuing.

Then, decorate the coffee can to look like a tiki light, this part is up to you. Depending on the theme or mood of it’s surrounding, make sure it looks jungle/hawaiian and you should be okay.

Put the small candle inside the coffee can and light it. Another option would be to add a citronella candle instead, if you are having any kinds of problems with bugs or mosquitoes.

You can basically repeat these steps for as many pipes, spray paint and other materials you have available. I’ve heard of people making a dozen and surrounding their patio with them.

There you have it, making your very own tiki light has never been easier!
